Construction is nearing completion on the renovation of Pier 57 at the Hudson River Park in Chelsea. The pier originally opened in 1954 as an ocean liner pier for cargo and passenger services. At the time of its opening, the pier was the largest dock construction project by the City of New York.

In it's current renovation, the pier houses anchor tenants Google in a 250,000-square-foot space. Later this year, the James Beard Foundation is slated to open a showcase kitchen, dining and demonstration space, and food hall with vendor kiosks. A two acre public park occupies the roof. The project is led by developers RXR Realty with Youngwoo & Associates and Handel Architects is responsible for the design.
Rooftop Park
A 80,000 square foot public park at the rooftop, designed by Handel Architects in collaboration with !Melk Landscape Architecture, will offer a screening venue for the Tribeca Film Festival.

Google Offices
Google’s Hudson River campus on Pier 57 includes space for 450 employees, adding to the tech company’s New York staff that already totals over 12,000. Diller Scofidio + Renfro led the design of the interiors, along with HLW International.

Tour: The Webster Los Angeles
Adjaye Associates has completed a new retail store for The Webster at the Beverly Center In Los Angeles. The luxury multi-brand fashion house’s new 11,000-square-foot flagship store is the first project by David Adjaye in California. Located at the corner of Beverly Boulevard and San Vicente Boulevard, the storefront features a pink-tinted concrete facade that creates a covered entrance with a large scale digital screen projected onto the inner face.
The pink-tinted concrete of the exterior carries into the interiors with curving walls enclosing changing rooms and product displays. Smooth concrete at the lower half of the interior walls transitions to a more textured finish at the upper half and ceiling of the store. Terrazzo with fragments of black cherry marble covers the floor.

Construction Update: 767 5th Avenue - Apple Store - Fifth Avenue

The iconic glass cube has returned with a rainbow colored wrap at the soon to open home of Apple's expanded Fifth Avenue flagship store. Located underneath the plaza of the General Motors Building, Foster + Partners' renovation will more than double the store's previous size, expanding from 32,000-square-feet to 77,000-square-feet. The reinstalled cube has maintained the previous three full height panel per facade configuration. When first constructed, the cube was composed of a nine glass panel grid per facade but was later simplified to three full height panels. The skylights that populate the plaza on either side of the cube are also installed, along with newly planted trees and linear reflecting pools.

Construction Tour: Times Square Theater
Construction is underway at the restoration and renovation of the Times Square Theater at 215 West 42nd Street from Stillman Development International and Daishin Securities. Led by Beyer Blinder Belle, the renovation will convert the original 1920’s theater structure by architect Eugene DeRosa into a 5-story, 52,000 square foot retail/entertainment/restaurant space with an outdoor terrace on the third and fourth floors with views of 42nd Street. Colliers International will oversee leasing.
As part of the renovation, the original Indiana limestone façade will be lifted by five feet and a 23-foot tall glass overlook constructed at the second floor, cantilevering out over the street. The theater’s proscenium arch and ceiling dome will also be restored by experts offsite and repositioned in the newly renovated space.

Construction Update: 277 Mott Street

Facade installation is wrapping up at 277 Mott Street, a seven story retail building in the Nolita neighborhood of Manhattan from Karl Kopp. Designed by Toshiko Mori Architects, the structure is clad in alternating vertical piers of glass and CNC milled stone on the facade fronting Mott Street. The mostly transparent rear yard facade will showcase the monumental stair that serves as the primary vertical circulation, with views out to a garden.

The iconic glass cube has been dismantled while construction is ongoing but will be a part of the completed renovation. The cube has been previously redesigned to use less glass panels than the original, so there is a possibility that it will return in a modified form. A November 2018 completion date is currently expected for the reopening of the store.

Construction Update: Pier 17

Exterior construction is wrapping up at the Howard Hughes Corporation's new retail center at Pier 17. This new structure is part of the redevelopment of the site formerly home to Benjamin Thompson's 1983 structure of similar function. The 300,000 square foot retail project is designed by SHoP Architects, the firm also responsible for the nearby Pier 15 and the East River Waterfront Esplanade renovation.

The façade consists of two lower floors clad in a corrugated dark gray metal panel and two upper floors clad in panels of channel glass and tall windows. Operable glass walls at the north and south facades can slide vertically down to close off the lower floors.

In it's current renovation, the pier will house anchor tenants Google in a 250,000-square-foot space. Chef Anthony Bourdain is slated to open his Bourdain Market in a 100,000-square-foot space on the main concourse and mezzanine. A 80,000-square-foot public park will occupy the roof. The project is led by developers RXR Realty with Youngwoo & Associates and Handel Architects is responsible for the design.

Construction Update: Empire Outlets and the New York Wheel

Superstructure is rising at Empire Outlets, a 350,000 square foot outlet shopping complex next to the St. George Ferry Terminal on the Staten Island waterfront. Design of the development is led by SHoP Architects and will include approximately 100 designer outlet retailers and a 190-key hotel. Completion is slated for late 2017.

Located near the site of the Empire Outlets, structure for the New York Wheel has also started to go up. When completed, the 630 foot tall observation wheel will offer stunning views of the New York harbor to 1,440 people per rotation. Currently, the four pedestals have been installed and await the 275 foot tall legs that will support the wheel. The main precast concrete structure for the adjacent terminal building and parking garage structure is mostly complete. Terra cotta fins and curtain wall will eventually clad the structure.
