Tour: Conrad Washington DC

Southeast corner from I Street NW.

Hilton’s luxury hotel brand Conrad has opened a new location at CityCenterDC in Washington, DC. The 10 story, 360-key hotel is developed by Hines and Qatari Diar. Herzog & de Meuron are responsible for the design which features an organic massing with rounded corners and clad in a glass curtain wall.

Southwest corner from I Street NW.

The ground floor retail features storefronts clad in rounded glass panels. Earlier renderings seemed to show the entire building clad in these rounded panels, but traditional flat glass panels were employed everywhere but the corners above the ground floor in the built project.

After entering the main entrance on the ground floor, hotel guests head to the third floor and its central atrium. A chain mesh veil hangs around the perimeter of the organically shaped atrium void and natural light fills the space from numerous circular skylights at the roof above. At the third floor, a collection of hotel amenities radiate around the central atrium, including restaurant Estuary, a lobby bar, conference rooms, and reception desk.

Tour: 56 Leonard Street

One of the standout projects of New York’s recent construction boom is Alexico Group and Hines’ 56 Leonard, the 145-unit, 830 foot tall residential tower in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan. Designed by Herzog & deMeuron, the tower is often affectionately referred to as the Jenga tower for its massing of stacked floor plates with a multitude of alternating balconies that resembles the stacked block game.

While the majority of the tower's floor plates alternate the balcony locations on every other floor in an A/B pattern, the upper floors of the tower are designed with a less homogeneous variation. Each of the final 11 floor plates are unique, creating variations in how each floor overhangs or recedes from the other.

Penthouse

The penthouses on the top 11 floors feature 14 foot floor-to-floor ceilings, a kitchen with a Herzog & de Meuron custom-designed grand piano-shaped island and a custom-sculpted range hood, a sculptural white enameled steel wood burning fireplace, a five-fixture master bathroom of travertine and Thassoss marble with radiant heated floors, and multiple terraces with panoramic views of the city.

Construction Update: Jade Signature

East facade.

Construction has finished at Jade Signature, Fortune International Group's 57-story, 192-unit residential tower in the Sunny Isle Beach neighborhood of Miami. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the tower features a parallelogram footprint that minimizes the skyscraper's shadow footprint on the beach. The orientation also maximizes the sun exposure for the ocean-facing units. The concrete structure provides balconies along the east and west facades that increase floor area in most units by approximately 30 percent. Corner balconies feature the tower's signature sculptural concrete columns, with glass railings that tilt outward to minimize reflection.

215 Chrystie

Superstructure and window installation continues at Herzog & deMeuron's 28-story hotel and residential tower in the Bowery.

Superstructure has reached the 20th floor and window installation has surpassed the 11th floor at 215 Chrystie, the 28-story tower from developers Ian Schrager, HFZ Capital Group, and the Witkoff Group.

Southeast corner of the tower from Chrystie Street.

The tower will include 370 hotel rooms under the PUBLIC brand at the lower levels and 11 condos on the upper floors. Pritzker Prize winning architects Herzog & de Meuron have designed the tower as a rectangular extrusion with a setback volume for the upper condo floors. Sloping floor-to-ceiling glass panels are set in between angular, exposed concrete columns.
