Construction Update: Manhattan West

Superstructure is rising at Two Manhattan West, the second new office tower at Brookfield Properties' Manhattan West. The tower is part of the six building mixed use mega-development adjacent to the new Hudson Yards neighborhood. Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) led the design of the 58-story tower, which features a tapered massing with a glass curtain wall facade. One Manhattan West, an adjacent 67-story office tower of similar design opened last year at the northeast corner of the site.

A 164-room luxury hotel operated by Pendry Hotels is currently rising on the northern boundary of the Manhattan West development. Also designed by SOM, the 281-foot-tall tower features a fluted glass curtain wall.

Facade installation is nearing completion at the Pendry Hotel at the norther boundary of the Manhattan West development. Designed by SOM, the same architects as the nearby One Manhattan West, the 281-foot-tall tower features a fluted glass curtain wall. Pendry Hotels will operate the 164-room luxury hotel.

Construction continues at Brookfield Properties' Manhattan West, the six building mixed use mega-development adjacent to the new Hudson Yards neighborhood. The latest component of the project to begin construction, One Manhattan West, continues to rise. Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), the 67-story tower will offer 2.1 million square feet of office space when it opens in 2019. Curtain wall installation continues on the lower third of the office tower, while steel superstructure has surpassed the half-way mark.
A slightly smaller 62-story office tower at Two Manhattan West, also designed by SOM, will follow in 2021 on an adjacent site to the south.

Construction is wrapping up at 5 Manhattan West, a 1969 Brutalist office building renovated by REX. The original precast concrete façade was removed and replaced with pleated glass curtain wall panels that restore floor area lost in the original sloped design. Occupation in the zone adjacent to the facade was previously impeded by the sloped walls.

The design of the curtain wall includes a horizontal mullion cap at the intermediate mullion directly above the integrated louver for the PTAC units and a pronounced horizontal metal spandrel panel every fourth floor. Design of the tower is by SOM, architects for the two office towers set to eventually rise to the east, with SLCE Architects serving as Architect of Record.

Manhattan West
Installation of the pleated glass curtain wall has wrapped up on the west facade at 450 West 33rd Street, also known as 5 Manhattan West. Developed by Brookfield Office Properties, the renovation of the 1969 Brutalist office building at 5 Manhattan West is one component of the larger Manhattan West mega project. Architecture firm REX is overseeing the office renovation which will replace the original precast concrete façade with glass curtain wall panels. The reclad began on the flat east facade this past summer, before moving on to the pleated west facade. Work now looks set to begin on the pleated south facade.

Manhattan West

Along with fully modernizing Five Manhattan West, two new office towers and one residential tower will be constructed on a platform over the rail lines that occupy the site. Architecture firm REX is overseeing the office renovation which will replace the original precast concrete façade with glass curtain wall panels. The sole vertical façade at the east elevation now sports the new glass envelope and work now begins on the first pleated façade at the west elevation. Late last week the first panels went up at the northwest corner. Completion of Five Manhattan West is slated for sometime next year.
