Construction Update: Columbia University Manhattanville Campus
Southeast corner of the Science Center.
Two of the phase one buildings at Columbia University's Manhattanville campus have completed construction and are now open. Renzo Piano's firm has overseen the design of both the Jerome L. Greene Science Center and the Lenfest Center for the Arts. The 9-story, 450,000 square-foot science center will bring together researchers from across the University including the Columbia University Medical Center, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. The ground floor will house the Center for Education and Outreach, a public education center focused on brain science that will serve the general public and K-12 schools.

The newly completed Lenfest Center for the Arts, also designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), sits to the west of the Science Center and houses galleries, performance spaces, a screening room, and offices in an eight-story structure. A unitized panel system of white metal and glass clads the exterior, a similar look to the firm's Whitney Museum at the High Line.

Located south of the Science Center, it will house a 400-seat auditorium and state-of-the-art seminar and meeting rooms inside a five-story structure.

Columbia University Manhattanville Campus
With exterior work wrapping up on the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, much of the progress since the last update is focused on the Lenfest Center for the Arts, the smaller, adjacent building. Also designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), the Center for the Arts houses galleries, performance spaces, a screening room, and offices into an eight-story structure. Currently, the steel superstructure has topped out and installation of the exterior wall is underway. The structure looks to be clad in a unitized panel system of white metal and glass similar in appearance to RPBW's almost completed Whitney Museum at the High Line.
The third RPBW building in Columbia University's master plan for the Manhattanville campus, the Academic Conference Center, has yet to start up after the initial site demo completed. Located south of the Science Center, it will house a 400-seat auditorium and state-of-the-art seminar and meeting rooms inside a five-story structure.

Jerome L. Greene Science Center & Lenfest Center for the Arts
Substantial progress has been made at Renzo Piano's Jerome L. Greene Science Center, the first building for Columbia University's Manhattanville Campus expansion. When it opens in 2016, the 9-story, 450,000 square-foot building will bring together researchers from across the University including the Columbia University Medical Center, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. The ground floor will house the Center for Education and Outreach, a public education center focused on brain science that will serve the general public and K-12 schools.
Much of the glass curtain wall has been installed, with only the ground floor and rooftop mechanical spaces awaiting their enclosure. Inside, framing and sheetrock installation is ongoing throughout, along with MEP piping and ductwork.
Adjacent to the Science Center, Piano's Lenfest Center for the Arts has topped out. Metal decking and slab pours are ongoing, with exterior wall installation set to begin soon. The completed building will include a screening room, art gallery, performance space and smaller presentation spaces when it opens in 2016.
