Construction Update: David Hammons' Days End at Hudson River Park
Construction is nearing completion on David Hammons’ Days End permanent installation in Hudson River Park’s Gansevoort Peninsula for the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Hudson River Park Trust. Inspired by Gordon Matta-Clark’s 1975 artwork also titled Days End, the open structure follows the outline of the Pier 52 shed that Matta-Clark cut five openings into. The sixth and final frame was installed this past weekend.

Exterior construction appears to be significantly complete at Renzo Piano's new $400 million home for the Whitney Museum located at the entry to the High Line's first phase. The 200,000 square foot museum will contain 50,000 square feet of indoor galleries, 13,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space and terraces facing the High Line. Additional program includes a lobby that will also serve as free gallery, black box theater, 170-seat theater, education center, works on paper study center, conservation lab, and library reading room. A retail shop and restaurant will be located on the ground floor, with a café on the top floor.
Staff have already started to move in to their offices on the third and fourth floor. The opening of the museum to the public is set for May 1, 2015.

At the southern end of the High Line, the park's cultural anchor progresses towards its opening next year. The museum will contain indoor and outdoor exhibition space in a stepping form that sets back from the High Line, including the largest column-free gallery space in New York City. Currently, the construction progress of the exterior envelope focuses on installation of the 30 and 60 foot enameled steel panels that enclose much of the exhibition space.
