Field Update: Jerome L. Greene Science Center / Renzo Piano Building Workshop / August 31, 2013
Columbia University's first building under construction at the Manhattanville campus, the Jerome L. Green Science Center, is nearing the milestone of structural topping out. Steel has been erected to floor nine of ten which suggests a fall date for topping out. The construction of the steel superstructure has employed a unique technique known as the "top down" method which allows the the basement levels to be excavated and floors and walls poured below while the steel structure is simultaneously erected above ground.
When completed, the Science Center will house the Zuckerman Mind Brain and Behavior Institute, a multidisciplinary brain science research institute. Research will focus on the typical realm of the sciences as well as law, business, economics, statistics, and beyond. The ground floor will address the nearby community with a health clinic, education center, retail and restaurant.
